Young Indy gets a release date

Man I don't know what I did this year but God likes me...or at least wants me entertained before something bad happens. Before Christmas there's a ton of stuff I've been waiting for. halo 3, the super duper Blade Runner set and now this...thank you heavenly bodies.

The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles vol 1 is coming our way. Here's what www.dvdactive.com had to say:

Paramount Home Entertainment has sent over artwork for the first volume of The Adventures of Young Indiana Jones which stars Sean Patrick Flanery, Corey Carrier, and George Hall. The 12 disc package will be available to own from the 23rd October, and should retail at around $117.99. According to our friends at TVShowsOnDVD.com, the set will include extensive historical documentaries, a "Revolutions Interactive Game", an "Interactive Timeline", and a "Professor Video".

Can I get a hell yeah? The show itself was awesome. Only question is, how many of these sets are their going to be?

A new take on an old wound: Behind the Mask review

I love the 80's slasher flick. Out of all of the horror villains from the area, Jason Voorhees is a personal favorite. He is both murderer and righteous hand of God all in one (eventually I'll do a post explaining that idea).

So when I started hearing about this new take on the 80's standard I was interested and then when I heard it was mixed with Blair Witch style "documentary" footage...I was a little less interested.

Now don't get me wrong. The original Blair Witch film was good and somewhat original (unless you've seen Cannibal Holocaust but much like that first Sex Pistols gig, more people have said they've seen it then actually have) and if you saw it like I did opening night before the huge hype, it was an amazing theatrical feat made with no money.

I just hate all of the rip offs that came after.

Which meant I did not further explore the movie I had heard bits about...until I went and rented it on dvd.

Which brings our long winded journey to my review of Behind the mask: The Ride of Leslie Vernon.

And I am impressed. Simple version, not amazing but definitely worth seeing because it is something special.

The film follows a bunch of college interns who are following Leslie Vernon as he prepares for his first appearance as a Jason style bogeyman in the town of Glen Echo. It is fairly comedic as we see him train (apparently cardio is very important so you can keep up with your victim) , visit his mentor Eugene (a retired killer played by Scott Wilson, great character actor) and set the house up where he's going to murder a bunch of teenagers just the way he likes it. I particularly like the parts with Eugene, especially when you figure out that his wife is a survivor.

This part is very witty and well written. It's similar to the explaining of horror conventions from Scream but not nearly as snarky. This part is also shot differently, half in documentary style and then switching occasionally to full panovision film. Surprisingly it is cut incredibly well so these interchanges are not jarring.

And then we get to the second half of the movie which becomes a slasher flick with a twist.

Won't give any spoilers away but it was a twist that was well played (maybe a little predictable but maybe I've seen too many horror movies).

I am really interested to see where filmmaker Scott Glosserman goes from here. Underneath is the trailer, I highly recommend giving it a rent.

Disney gets rid of DVD sequels

Found this the other day at www.dvdreview.com

"As part of the reorganizing of Disney's animation unit, John Lasseter of PIXAR fame has put an end to direct to DVD sequels to the studios theatrical films claiming that films like Bambi II and Aladdin III destroy the integrity of their original stories. Included in this is the previously scheduled Tinkerbell movie, which was - according to Lasseter - a mess."

Other such crap sequels that have already been released included The Little Mermaid 2 where Ariel's daughter wants to be a mermaid.

If you are still clamoring for that film however just buy the Little mermaid and when you're done hit rewind on your dvd player. Two movies for the price of one.

Benoit and the media

I had earlier in the day decided I wasn't going to retouch the subject especially since everyone else is across the board but it has become an interesting exercise in a media study of spin.

Here are the facts:

Chris Benoit is dead and he more then likely murdered his wife and child before he committed suicide. These are facts that aren't likely to change.

But here's where the weird aspect of the media comes in and spin.

Monday night, the WWE's website was filled with tidbits about Benoit his death and his life.

RAW (the WWE's monday night wrestling program) was not live. They canceled the sold out live event and instead paid tribute to their fallen co-worker both in comments and be rebroadcasting his finest matches.

This was all before the WWE and the public knew what had happened.

Now if you go through the WWE's website, there is only one mention of him and that regards the facts as the WWE knows them. All mentions of Benoit have been deleted from various things (take a look through the dvd section of their online store for instance) and the tributes have been taken down. The tribute show will not be re-broadcast.

In many ways this is the most respectful the WWE has ever been about such things.

And the wwe has also made a statement regarding how steroids more then likely did not cause this tragedy.

I believe that is what they refer to in movies as "batting down the hatches"

Now on to me.

I was a little torn on if I should take down my previous post in light to the new facts. I've decided that I would just in light of the fact that something I had heard along the line is wrong about a man I respected. And he has two children who are still out there and for the time being I don't want them coming across the post praising their Dad who may have murdered their brother.

DVD News Kill Bill Uncut and Masters of Horror

Well, I guess in terms of an uncut version of Kill Bill on dvd any news is good news. Amazon has posted a preorder for Kill Bill - The Whole Bloody Affair but not much in the way of details. It's apparently going to be 4 discs. They also list the running time as being 247 mins which happens to be one minute less than both theatrical versions put together. Now this could just be Amazon being lazy or it could mean something interesting since in the combined cut of the film the intro part to Kill Bill vol 2 would be not be there. Food for thought.

Next up we have the entire season 1 of Masters of Horror. Now be warned the show is hit and miss. Each episode is a mini-movie done by great horror directors. My personal favorite is John carpenter's Cigarette Burns. But it also includes the fucked up-ness of Takashi Miike's Imprint.

And it comes in a cool box.

Things that I never thought I'd see

There are a few things I never thought I'd actually see. I never thought the theatrical cut of Blade Runner would be available on DVD. I didn't think we'd get a Simpsons movie (which later changed to a I didn't think we'd get it until the series ended) and I really thought my chain was going to be yanked about Indiana Jones 4 until Harrison Ford was dead.

Well all of those things are existing or on their way to exist.

For instance this was pic was taken by some guy named Spielberg and posted on http://www.indianajones.com/.

Yup it's an older Indy. Yesterday was Ford's first day of shooting in the costume.
And then we got an awesome Simpsons Trailer.

Blade Runner Goodness!

Blade Runner is one of the most influential sci-fi movies ever made.
You can not deny that fact.

It also happens to be a film that has more stories about it then most sci-fi films. And probably more complaints then others as well.

Fr instance I'm one of those people who isn't completly satisfied with either cut of the movie. The "Director's" cut of the film has a much better ending BUT it drags due in certain parts due to the loss of the narration.

Well thank goodness for DVD.

The rumored Blade Runner: The Final Cut is on it's way in the fall. Details are kind of sketchy but we do know the following. It's going to be 4 or 5 discs. It will probably contain the theatrical cut of the film, the "Director's" cut of the film and a brand new cut we have yet to see. They have shot reportedly 75 mins of new footage for it. I imagine this set will be very similar to the Aliens Quadrilogy; it will have new extras and probably every Blade Runner extra that has been previously put out alone with various documentaries.

FUCK YEAH!

Heroes, Serenity and stuff

Alrighty www.dvdactive.com has provided us with a bunch of new news.

First off keeping with the theme of the earlier post, Heroes Season 1 is coming to dvd August 28.

Universal Home Video has sent over very early details on the first season of Heroes which stars Hayden Panettiere. This Tim Kring created series will be available to own from the 28th August, and should retail at around $59.98. The seven-disc package will include all 23 episodes - presented in 1.78:1 anamorphic widescreen, along with English Dolby Digital 5.1 tracks. Extras will include audio commentaries, the original un-aired pilot episode with optional commentary, deleted scenes, a making of featurette, a special effects featurette, and a stunts featurette. A HD DVD release will also be available for $99.98. This will include all of the above, along with additional material (PIP video commentaries, a Genetic Abilities test, and more). We've attached some sales artwork below - the retail artwork may differ slightly.

The specs for that Serenity dvd are now out and it's pretty much the Region 4 set.

And finnally my favorite movie of the year so far 300 is coming out in single and double disc sets July 31.

Warner has announced single ($28.98) and double-disc ($34.99) editions of 300 which stars Gerard Butler, David Wenham, and Dominic West. The film will be presented in 2.40:1 anamorphic widescreen, along with an English Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround track. The only extra material on the single-disc wil be an audio commentary with director Zack Snyder, Writer Kurt Johnstad and Director of Photography Larry Fong. The two-disc collector's edition will include that, along with deleted scenes with a director's intro, a The 300- Fact or Fiction? featurette, a Who Were The Spartans: The Warriors of 300 featurette, a Frank Miller Tapes featurette, webisodes that go behind the scenes on the set of 300, and a photo gallery. HD DVD/DVD Combo and Blu-ray releases will be available seperately for $39.99 and $34.99 respectively

And now a fake 300/Halo 3 trailer

Tons of new crap

Hola, Chittendango here from the middle of nowhere...which is just to the south of Barrie.
First thing first. Robot Chicken, produced to by geek-like-us Seth Green will be doing an 30 min Star Wars show. From the trailer I gather its going to be new stuff and the best of old stuff.
What trailer?
This trailer

Robot Chicken Star Wars

The problem with action movies today is the violence is all taken away. For instance The Condemed which I cauht a few weeks ago. Simple plot; convicts on an island rigged for internet ppv killing until the last man. Starring hopeful new man of action "Stone Cold" Steve Austin and everyone's favorite "I-Tie" hating British badass Vinnie Jones. Now a plot so simple I wasn't expecting much other then Mr. Austin beating the crap out of people. Every action scene was however ruined by the "Saving Private Ryan" shakey cam or a well timed explosion that didn't include any body parts.

Not like the movies of my youth. Which brings us to another www.dvdactive.com update.

A two disc Robocop.

Robocop was the king of violent movies....until you got to see the Criterion edition which had the uncut international version of the film which added just a little more violence. The board room scene for instance just has a few more seconds added but those seconds are drenched in blood and guts.

Which is why it's nice that MGM is bringing you both theatrical and international cuts of the film and a ton of extras.

MGM Home Entertainment has sent over details on a 20th Anniversary Edition of Robocop which stars Peter Weller, Kurtwood Smith, and Ronny Cox. The two-disc special edition will be available to own from the 21st August, and should retail at around $22.98. The set will include both the theatrical and extended cuts (presented in anamorphic widescreen, along with DTS 5.1 Surround tracks), along with commentary by director Paul Verhoven, writer Ed Neumeier and executive producer Jon Davison, a Flesh And Steel: The Making Of Robocop featurette, a Shooting Robocop 1987 featurette, a Making Robocop 1987 featurette, The Boardroom: Storyboard With Commentary By Animator Phil Tippet featurette, deleted scenes, an OCP Press Conference feature, a Nun In The Street Interview, and further featurettes on the cast, special effects, and design. Completing the set will be a Villains Of Old Detroit featurette, a Special Effects: Then And Now featurette, a Robocop: Creating A Legend featurette, and trailers and TV spots

Now if you already have the trilogy box set (like myself) it probably isn't worth it. But if you don't have it, I would pick it up. Plus once again, spiffy metal box.

I also highly recomend going out an buying copies for the younger generations in the hopes that we might avert an age of pansy movie watchers; Kids raised on blood less action movies (The Condemed, Ghost Rider, I'm looking in your direction). You know kind of like when you take a virgin to a whore. You're doing the best thing for them.

I'm going to do up a list of my top ten violent films later on.

Serenity DVD double dip

"I'll let you have it this time but if a three disc comes out before 2009, I'm gonna shoot ya."

Do you love Firefly/Serenity. Course you do because I don't believe that mentally insane retards are allowed access to computers and those are the only people who don't like Firefly/Serenity.

Well the dvd double dip has finally arrived. I saw this on www.dvdactive.com

Universal Home Video has sent over early details on a new two-disc collector's edition of Serenity which stars Nathan Fillion, and Alan Tudyk. This Joss Whedon directed sci-fi will be available to own from the 21st August, and should retail at around $26.98. The film itself will be presented in 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen, along with English Dolby Digital 5.1, and DTS 5.1 Surround tracks. Universal has yet to reveal the extra material I'm afraid, but we'll bring you further details very shortly. Stay tuned.

Now while Universal hasn't said much on the extras I imagine it's goning to carry the extras that we already got and probably the rest of the extras that have been available to other parts of the world for a while. This for instance is the R4 (Australia) version of the dvd set available from February 2006.

Acclaimed cult writer Joss Whedon’s feature length follow up to his excellent Firefly series, Serenity, is due for a February 8th region four release. Unlike the R1, it will be housed inside a lovely tin that features the original theatrical artwork. The film will be presented in an anamorphic widescreen format with English audio in Dolby Digital 5.1. The disc will also contain supplementary materials exclusive to the region four disc including A Filmmakers Journey - Journey with Joss from Script to Screen, Joss Whedon Q&A Session - Filmed at Fox Studios in Sydney, Extended Scenes, Take a Walk on Serenity - Cast and Crew take us on a special tour of the Serenity ship and The Green Clan - Expose on Cinematographer Jack Green and his team. Additional extras include deleted scenes, outtakes, Future History - The Story of Earth That Was, What's In A Firefly, Re-lighting The Firefly, Joss Whedon Introduction, Feature Commentary and Easter Egg - We'll Have A Fruity Oaty Good Time.

Not to mention it came with better artwork then our region and in one of those neat tins.

Ape Call!

If you've ever claimed to be a participant in the older fandom of Planet of the Apes, this DVD collection- The Ultimate DVD Collection- is probably all you'll ever need to own. It has all 6 movies (yes, including Tim Burton's), the TV series, AND the animated series, and a crapload of bonus material to boot. It spans about 14 discs and retails for just over $100 US, which you have to admit is pretty damn good. It is the most perfect collection you could ever buy. But what makes it truly great-

it comes in a fucking ape head, damn it.

Yes, this DVD collection fits snugly into the back of a bust of Caesar himself, complete with green shirt and combable hair (if you're so inclined). There is no better way complete the feng-shui of your living room than with a life-like ape's head.

If this were any other fandom, it would seem tacky, but there's something strangely dignified about it. Like having a big painting of Vincent Price in your living room or something.

Technify the Old

First of all, I managed to find some drivers for my TV card, from the company website, since I can't find the disc that came with it. I don't get the program that it's supposed to run with it, but that's okay too since it's a generic card.

This time around, I actually have Windows Movie-Maker,(and a better computer) so I hooked up the VCR and gave some VHS capture a shot- it worked. I had to fool with the audio to get it to come through- I don't think the audio on the card is set right, so I used my sound card instead.

Anyway, when I get some more time I can capture all of my favourite home-movies to digital format and burn them to DVD. This also means that I could make little music videos and such.

In other news, my computer clock keeps losing time...it's very disconcerting.

First New Year's Resolution....

To update this blog more. I feel bad for leaving it like this.

Anyway, technologically-related stuff in my life:

  • Got my marks back- not too shabby. Haven't seen my new schedule yet
  • Yahoo! has a couple of new features of the MyYahoo! part of their site- this includes RSS feeds, and which I figured includes Blogger. The engine for setting them up is still really finicky, but I've managed to get a few on there
  • Bought myself a Nexxtech 128mb mp3 player that doubles as a USB flash drive, on boxing day. I didn't get a deal or anything; I just really, really wanted one
  • Got a bunch of cool stuff for christmas, including a book called "Chris Crawford on Interactive Storytelling" (which I asked for, specifically) and a couple of DVDs- one of them was the Last Unicorn, which was recently re-released, with absolutely no excitement, on disc
  • Phil parents bought us a brand-new washer-spinner to replace the one that was eating our clothes
  • I couldn't find "The Sims" for mac- it did not occur to me how many of the major chains that sell computer games are entirely slaves to the PC realm. Michelle will just have to wait 'til later or until somebody else finds it for her, since I have a lot to learn about shopping for Macintosh hardware and software (and yes, I thought of "Data Integrity" at York)

New mantra for the year: "I said it, I did it."

Just like Sam. ;)

Toronto Anime Convention

Yesterday I attended the "TAC" or Toronto Anime Convention, a 'mini-con' sponsored by the same people that run CN Anime in the summer. This one is fondly referred to as 'ghetto-con', by its attendees. The minor $10 cover to get in is a nice break from most conventions (which are usually $30 and up), but really all there was to see was the dealers room. There were loads of people in costume, as usual, but with no real place to go, but miling around the foyer. Most of the fun stuff listed in the brochure was not on the itinerary when we got there.

I met up with some of the guys from the AnimeGusto board, as well as Justin and a friend of his. I managed to score a few deals in the dealers room- two one-shot animes (one was 4 episodes, the other was 12) for $25, a decent Noir poster for $4, and another nice little item that I will not mention here, because someone is getting it for christmas. All in all, not too shabby, considering I restricted myself to spending $40 and under.

I saw a Sailor Stars DVD set for $70, which I ogled for a fairly long time, but I couldn't really justify buying it at this point, so I didn't

Phil bought a bunch of Cowboy Bebop for $10 (VHS) and Justin bought the whole series on DVD. We watched some of it afterward, and I was reminded of why it's one of my favourites. One of these days, if I have money, I'll seriously have to go out and buy all my favourite series. The first and second season Sailor Moon box-sets went up in price again, presumably because ADV seems to have taken them off the market?? It's crazy. Ebay would be my best friend in that situation.

Considering XP

I know, I know, I swore I would go purely Linux on my uber little machine, but with the number of drivers actually available for the hardware I have, it would be more efficient to use Windows (and I will not have wasted my money on that DVD-RAM drive or that TV card). To practice my Linux, I will do what Arthur did and just use Knoppix (Linux of the bootable CD variety) and maybe put Linux on my crappy little laptop as an alternative way to practice my command-line Linux skills (which are terrible right now, another reason why Linspire is not panning out for me). I also have some software that I am dying to use, but can't, because it's meant for Windows. I have all this damn stuff that's been given to me since I switched to Linux, and it's pissing me off.

Could be...so....uber....

Well, it was an interesting experiment, anyway. But I don't think I'm ready for it. I just don't have the computer skills to harness the power of open-source.

And I didn't accumulate much in the way of files, so burning those will be no problem.

This is purely a software thing, really. If I get Windows I'll be able to watch DVDs and TV on my computer again.

Woot.

Grrr

Well, on friday I actually DID make it for a film festival movie....the bugger of it was, I missed the first one I paid for, and Phil didn't come at all. The hot water pipe burst the night before and was spraying water all over the furnace, and it turned out that the funky smell we'd been trying to determine the source of several days was a dead rat. Morris tryed to imply we'd left a window open or something, but the there was rat poison already in the crawlspace where the rat started out, so Morris must have known at some point that there was vermin. Anyway, Phil had to wait for a plumber.

*deep breath*

So I pre-paid eighty bucks for nothing. Well, not quite nothing. I went to see "Duck Season", which is a Mexican film about these two boys that stay home on a sunday to play video games (mainly Halo) and a bunch of crazy stuff happens to them. It was a wonderful movie, and Phil said that he felt bad that he had to stay and that he would pay me back. I'll be happy if he agrees to buy me the film on dvd, if it ever makes it Canada.

I bought a copy of EGM's fall preview while I was in the Manulife centre, at Indigo. I could have bought the one that said it covered both PC and Console games, but that one looked kind of lame, and EGM came with a nifty disc with a bunch of cool trailers and demos and stuff on it. We watched the trailers- that was fun. I don't have an Xbox or a Playstation 2 (but you have no idea how tempted I am to get one now, after seeing all of those new games), so we couldn't play the demos, but I might see if I can go over to Emma's later and play some of them on her Xbox.

I'm going to do my film analysis thing today- I rented "What's Up Doc" with Barbara Streisand and whats-his-face. That felt pretty 'typically hollywood', and I think it was made in like the 70s or 80s or something. The Blockbuster at keele and St. Clair SUCKS- they hardly have anything older than 20 or 30 years. All I saw was a couple of films with Jack Lemmon and...damn it I can't remember her name. They didn't look too interesting. Which I guess should have made them a good choice, but I felt like going with something reasonably familiar. That, and because it has Barbara Streisand in it, Phil's less likely to try to watch it with me, leaving me at my leisure to rewind it as much as I like.

So I thought, I can type faster than I write, maybe I'll watch it on my computer. I popped it in and a browser window appeared advertising that I could purchase a Linspire DVD player for $5 if I was member and $30 if I wasn't....the hell with that. But I looked around, and supposedly Mplayer is supposed to be able to play DVDs. I have Mplayer (or at least, Linspire tells me I do). Apparently, I have to run it from the console with some -dvd function or other. So I go to the console. I get into the "My Programs" directory, but I'll be damned if "Multimedia & Design" wasn't too complicated of a directory name for it to open, and it wouldn't go into the directory. So I renamed the directory "Multimedia" and that worked. But then I couldn't figure out what damn command I'm supposed to type in to run programs....I thought I would just type in the name of the program and the function-thingy and it would work. Argh. I'm contemplating downloading Xine, but when I have to install anything more complicated than an Instant Messenger on this thing, it gets disasterous. It's all a learning experience, but I think know how my parents felt when they were first presented with Windows. I have a headache.
