Saw it yesterday, I give it four stars out of five.

Without ruining the plot for you, I am just going to say I enjoyed the plot, the action, the romance and the ending.

Don't forget to sit through the credits and watch the extra scene at the end.

Star Trek's Nurse Chapel dies of leukemia

ENTERTAINMENT - Majel Barrett Roddenberry has been in more Star Trek episodes and Star Trek movies than any other Star Trek actor, for over four decades. She played the dark-haired Number One in the original Star Trek pilot but metamorphosed into the blond, miniskirted Nurse Christine Chapel in the original 1966-69 show.

She played the role of the ship's computer voice during all 5 sequel TV shows and many of the Star Trek movie incarnations, and Betazoid Ambassador Lwaxana Troi in 6 episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation and 3 episodes of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.

Roddenberry died of leukemia Thursday morning (December 18th) at her home in Bel-Air. She was 76.

Just two weeks ago she completed the voice of the ship's computer for the upcoming J.J. Abrams movie "Star Trek", which focuses on Kirk and Spock's first adventures together.

As Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry's widow she nurtured the legacy of the seminal science fiction TV series after his death. Roddenberry helped keep the franchise alive by inspiring fans and attended a major Star Trek convention each year. She was also the executive producer for two other Gene Roddenberry series, Andromeda and Earth: Final Conflict.

She also appeared in a Babylon 5 episode "Point of No Return", as Lady Morella, the psychic widow of the Centauri emperor, and parodied her voice work as a guest voice on Family Guy as the voice of Stewie Griffin's ship's computer in the episode "Emission Impossible".

Star Trek and its successors often focused on political and philosophical issues of the day. Roddenberry and her husband Gene, who died in 1991, believed in creating "thoughtful entertainment" and were proud of the show and the passionate devotion of its fans.

Born Majel Lee Hudec on February 23rd 1932, in Cleveland, she began taking acting classes as a child. She had some stage roles, then in the late 1950s and 1960s had bit parts in a few movies and small roles in TV series, including "Leave It to Beaver" and "Bonanza".

She met her husband in 1964 during a guest role for a Marine Corps drama he produced called "The Lieutenant". That same year, she was cast in the pilot for the Star Trek series as the no-nonsense second-in-command. The pilot did not appeal to NBC executives and a second pilot was made, although parts of the original later showed up in a two-part episode called "The Menagerie".

The couple married in Japan in 1969 after Star Trek (TOS) was cancelled.

Freak of Nature Video: BE SOMEBODY

Being that the holiday season is still upon us, I should probably be posting a holiday video, but oh well.

I'm a fan of MST3k, so for whatever reason, I'm fascinated by outrageously bad or bizarre videos from days past (the 80s is the best decade for this sort of stuff). Occasionally, a gem of a turd comes along that blows my mind and makes me wonder about God, the Universe and Everything.

So I present to you: Mr.T, The Movie. Be Somebody.

Okay, so maybe I don't know the actual title, but I challenge you to get through all 50 minutes of this video without looking for a large blunt object to bludgeon yourself with.

Synopsis: There isn't really a story to this, it's really just a collection of ways kids can survive in the harsh, harsh world of the public school system through the guidance of the 80s' most 'famous' educational icon. And singing. Lots of singing. But not by Mr. T - he half-raps his way through his lyrics with zest and style. I say 'half-raps' because he's saying the lyrics rather than singing them, presumably because his singing skills would bring more pain to the viewing of this video.

Why would I post such a thing? Because it's weird. And compared to what's on TV, the craptacular hilarity alone is worth more than most reality TV shows.

Contains appearances by New Edition (with the famous Bobby Brown) and a very, very young Fergie (in her Kids Incorporated days).

Sukiyaki Western and Devil's Chair reviews, non spolier

Well ladies and gents, the Toronto International Film Festival is over and I actually managed to leave the basement to catch a two flicks.

Last Thursday afternoon was Sukiyaki Western: Django which I had previously mentioned I was dying to see.

It pretty much lived up to my expectations of what a Miike film should be. Tons of violence, whacked out humour and general coolness that a lot of people won't get and in many ways I'd be hard pressed to blame them. There is one small part regarding catching a sword that was hysterical.

Saturday was The Devil's Chair, a great little British horror flick (trailer at the bottom) that when it started off my first thought was that someone had finally made a decent sequel to Hellraiser but then it turns into something completely different. Andrew Howard (who has appeared in one of Chittendango's favorite horror flicks of the last ten years, Below) stars in this one and honestly he takes what I'd normally consider a decent movie and turns it into something better. In many ways he kind of reminds me of the first time I saw Temuera Morrison (Jango Fett in the Star Wars prequels) in Once Were Warriors (which if you haven't seen it, go rent it now. You'll understand why I thought Morrison is a great presence). I just hope the film industry can find great material for him.

Django remade?

Hey loyal readers, this one came out of the blue for me, especially considering the fact that I love the original movie and I love the director of this apparent remake.

Sukiyaki Western: Django is apparently a remake of the classic Italian Blood and Guts extravaganza, Django. It's directed by the genius/mad as a fuck director Takashi Miike. part western part violence part something (lord only know when it comes to a Miike film), the dialogue is mainly in English (no horribly dubbing, yay!) and no your eyes will not deceive you, that is Quentin Tarantino and yes he is acting in the film.

Star Trek Rumour

Alrighty, time to make you cringe or cheer or go eh.
So the dude who plays Sylar on Heroes is playing Spock which lends itself to the on going theory that the next trek is a prequel, reimagining, thingymagig.

But Leonard Nimoy is also playing Spock in the film.

How can this be?

Well according to rumour (which I've heard from two different websites, a television show and a source of my own) the plot of the new JJ Abrams lead star trek film involves everyone's favorite continuity strangler,

TIME TRAVEL

The supposed plot is that a group of Romulans figure out how to travel through time (apparently the missed The Voyage home, once again proving how Kirk can kick an aliens ass in anything). The Romulans figure that if they go back in time, get rid of Kirk, the Romulan empire will be awesome and the galaxy will be liberated from Federation crapacity.
Now after those main points there's a lot of conjecture. Some theories point to this being a splitting in the time line so Abrams can do new and different things with same ideas without effecting continuity (hopefully Abrams will remake Star Trek 5 and have it not be a turd of a movie). Others say that this will be a time travel movie where Spock saves the universe and everything stays exactly the same.

Someone has also mentioned that Russel Crow might be the head Romulan, but I wouldn't bet on it.

Now before you say Time travel sucks (and if we were talking the X-Men I would whole heartedly agree with you), just remember the third and forth best films out of the series (being 4 and First Contact respectively) involve heavy doses of time travel....that sounds worse then I meant it.

Who are the Watchmen that you will be Watching?

Ah Comic Con is in full swing on the West Coast which means comic news is going to be coming fast and furious over the next little while. I'm going to blog the highlights of what I hear (I'm not there so it'll all be second hand) and provide links to better version of the story.

First up and roaring out of the gate is confirmation on Watchmen casting. If you have not read Watchmen, stop reading, hit a Chapters or comic shop, buy the paperback (or if you have the cash the amazing absolute edition) and read it and then come back. After you read it, you'll know why I'm excited and frightened by this coming to the screen. This is kind of like Lord of the Rings for fantasy nuts.

I'll be honest, I have not seen many of these people in anything. Haley apparently was nominated for an Oscar for a movie called "Little Children" but I have not seen it. In fact the only credit of his listed on IMDB that I can say 100% sure I've seen is The Bad News Bears...the original one. Crudup I know from Almost Famous and Big Fish. Patrick Wilson does an amazing job in a small thriller called Hard Candy which was one of my favorite films of last year. The rest I don't really know.

But before everyone starts critiquing the casting choices and saying things like "How can Crudup be Dr. Manhattan? He isn't 30 feet tall or blue!" I'd like to present some things to calm fan boy minds.

1) Zach Snyder. The dude has performed two film miracles. He created a remake of a Romero zombie film that wasn't only not horrible, but it was pretty damn good. he also took a graphic novel that not many outside of comics had heard of or read, called 300 and made it into a movie both faithful to the book and a blockbuster.

2) Micheal Keaton. When he was chosen to play Batman, everyone, including myself thought it was a terrible idea. Who thinks that now?

3) Hugh Jackman. No one had any clue who the dude was until X-Men came out. And he wasn't even the first choice. First choice was Doug Ray Scott.

So take heart fanboys. Yes it is one of our most cherished books but there is possibility it might not suck.

Iron Man solidifies a Marvel film universe.

Alrighty this is a little old but it has been completely confirmed that Samuel Jackson has a part, most likely a cameo in the Iron Man film.

Now who could Sam the Man be playing....hmmm, I wonder.....

Yup, Nick Fury. Which means the Marvel Universe is starting to interlock a little more in terms of the films.

The Ultimate version of Nick Fury is based off of Jackson's likeness, who else is he going to be playing.

What? You didn't know that? Talk to the repulsor cause the face isn't listening.

Man, today has been filled with tons of geek news so I'll go over bits and pieces.

Video Game Goodness
It's E3 and there is a ton of game news...well maybe not news actually a lot of grandstanding about why "My system is better then the others guy's". Nintendo bragging about their sales figures...and why the hell not? A lot of people were starting to think Nintendo was going to head the way of Sega before the DS and WII appeared. So a lot of stuff was said and very polite smack was talked and there are much better reporters covering it then me, they've even got their own channel. So for all the news and video check out G4 on your tv or head over to their website, http://www.g4tv.com/

In the meantime, here's what caught my eye.

Nintendo
Zelda is coming to the DS and man it looks cool. Zelda: Phantom Hourglass appears to be very touch screen oriented which worries me a little (Starfox, I'm glaring in anger in your direction) but the demo looked really good and it's selling craploads in Japan.

The WII blaster...a connection to make the wimote and nunchuck into a lightgun...and a resident evil game to go with it...if they weren't so hard to find I'd buy a Wii just for that...except for the fact I want Halo 3 much worse.

Xbox 360
Saw a bunch of things we already knew about but at least saw in game demos. Left 4 Dead being a little bit of a surprise. Fast "28 Days Later" style zombies, team play...drool. Assassin's Creed looks like it's coming along nicely. There was also a demo of Rock Band, the guitar hero style game but with guitar and drums and bass. And yet another Halo 3 trailer...which shows The Arbiter standing beside The Master Chief on Earth looking at the sky.

Sony
Trumpeted their non-price cut price cut (the current PS3's will be dropped by $100 which would be a step in the right direction except it's because they're bringing out another version with more memory at the higher price) and the line up of games on the way...not many of which are exclusive. That may even include the new Metal Gear. But they've also got Lair which I admit, looks awesome, piloting dragons, wiping out armies. But the games are kind of moot if no one can afford the system.

The others
Plenty of multi platform games coming but the one that caught my eye was Stranglehold, the video game sequel to one of my favorite movies, Hard Boiled...ah John Woo before Hollywood ruined him.

Comics
A bunch of little items and then one big one.

And finally a little personal retrospective. Until the early 90's I had bought comics but never hardcore collected...until the first issue of Rob Liefled's X-Force hit newsstands. Just look at that art...alright today it looks over used and plain but back then it really stood out.

Liefeld's been an interesting character when it comes to comics. Left Marvel to help form Image, thus helping to start a revolution in comics. Then goes back and takes over a couple of marvel books along with fellow creator Jim Lee and then get's kicked off of that and then get's kicked out (or leaves depending on who's version of the story you're ready) Image and forms or joins hands with numerous companies all the while only releasing a comic seemingly every few years.

This is not to mention the feuds he's started or snide remarks he's made about others (including his former Image brothers) or remarks made about him.

So lo and behold I was nearly knocked on my ass when I saw that Rob had teamed up with his former cohorts at Image to reprint old Youngblood material and print new Youngblood material.

Now the real question is, how long till the first new Youngblood comes out after it's supposed to and how long between issues? I say 3 months late for issue 1 and a year for issue 2.

Games Workshop: The company that must not be named

I'd like to preface this piece by saying that I have no relationship or affiliation whatsoever with the Games Workshop brand (thank god) and the following is a commentary of their very crude attempt to crush fan movements based around their products.

After widespread disappointment that the German film Damnatus, a fan film based on UK gaming franchise Warhammer, would not be released, it seems that Games Workshop (the company behind Warhammer) is amending its Intellectual Property Policy. A lot.

Check it out.

Aside from fan films, you also cannot create a 'Warhammer club', have an avatar that includes any of their IP without a disclaimer, create a webpage that uses their trademark, or even create fliers for your Warhammer event that uses their trademark. They've even gone so far as to highlight that they do not approve of people making use of their IP for their own private use.

See, if I were a more coarse person, I would say that my walls are currently plastered with GW paraphernalia that have been defaced with dirty phrases and crass insinuations about the private lives of orcs and tyranids. Why? Because they're my walls, that's why. And if I want to draw a mural of an Eldar soldier wearing a frilly hat and riding a unicorn, then I consider it my own prerogative to do so, even if no other person were to ever lay eyes on it.

But of course, I wouldn't do any of that because I don't play Warhammer. And I'm merely expressing my opinion here. And I am of the opinion that yes, 'fan works' that are heavily inspired by someone else's copyrighted material should give due credit to the original creator for the use of characters, worlds, mechanics, etc.

BUT I also think that imitation is the greatest form of flattery, and there are many brilliant minds that can do great justice to a brand, if given even the slightest opportunity. Also don't forget, without Tolkien, we probably wouldn't have Dungeons & Dragons. Without Anne Rice, Vampire the Masquerade would probably have very different story material. And without Warhammer, we likely wouldn't have this very spiffy looking film:

A new take on an old wound: Behind the Mask review

I love the 80's slasher flick. Out of all of the horror villains from the area, Jason Voorhees is a personal favorite. He is both murderer and righteous hand of God all in one (eventually I'll do a post explaining that idea).

So when I started hearing about this new take on the 80's standard I was interested and then when I heard it was mixed with Blair Witch style "documentary" footage...I was a little less interested.

Now don't get me wrong. The original Blair Witch film was good and somewhat original (unless you've seen Cannibal Holocaust but much like that first Sex Pistols gig, more people have said they've seen it then actually have) and if you saw it like I did opening night before the huge hype, it was an amazing theatrical feat made with no money.

I just hate all of the rip offs that came after.

Which meant I did not further explore the movie I had heard bits about...until I went and rented it on dvd.

Which brings our long winded journey to my review of Behind the mask: The Ride of Leslie Vernon.

And I am impressed. Simple version, not amazing but definitely worth seeing because it is something special.

The film follows a bunch of college interns who are following Leslie Vernon as he prepares for his first appearance as a Jason style bogeyman in the town of Glen Echo. It is fairly comedic as we see him train (apparently cardio is very important so you can keep up with your victim) , visit his mentor Eugene (a retired killer played by Scott Wilson, great character actor) and set the house up where he's going to murder a bunch of teenagers just the way he likes it. I particularly like the parts with Eugene, especially when you figure out that his wife is a survivor.

This part is very witty and well written. It's similar to the explaining of horror conventions from Scream but not nearly as snarky. This part is also shot differently, half in documentary style and then switching occasionally to full panovision film. Surprisingly it is cut incredibly well so these interchanges are not jarring.

And then we get to the second half of the movie which becomes a slasher flick with a twist.

Won't give any spoilers away but it was a twist that was well played (maybe a little predictable but maybe I've seen too many horror movies).

I am really interested to see where filmmaker Scott Glosserman goes from here. Underneath is the trailer, I highly recommend giving it a rent.

The odd trailer you saw in front of Transformers

Alrighty, everyone know J.J. Abrams?...well not personally but his work? Alias guru, leader of Lost, guy who pulled a good Mission Impossible 3 out of Tom Cruise, bringing us a Star trek revival that both makes geeks scared and horny all at the same time.

That guy?

He has a movie coming out that's doing a pretty cool marketing campaign.

And what's that movie called?

Hell if I know.

The code name for the project is "Cloverfield".

Is that the title of the project?

See previous answer. But it could be. There's a date attached to the trailer 1-18-08...which has also been rumored to be the title. But that is not definite either.

What is the movie about?

See previous answers. What it appears to be about is a large creature of some nature destroys New York as people film it with camcorders.

But it isn't quite that simple. I've heard rumors of it being a cthulu movie (more on that in a sec), a monster movies mixed with the Blair Witch Project. A spin off of Abram's show Lost has also been suggested. I've even heard Godzilla or a sequel to the American Godzilla.

From what I've read, Godzilla has ben discounted quickly...or at least the American one. So yes, there is a God and he still ocasionally does good.

RemakeoRama #1 The Films of John Carpenter

Hey everyone. Just go done reading a few things and I figured I'd do the first part in a "whenever the hell I want to write one" series called Remakeorama.

Hollywood does not trust new ideas. Always leery because the bottom line is money.

So in not wanting to trust new ideas, Hollywood is a fertile breeding ground for the remake. And right now one of the guys who get's remade a lot is filmmaker, John Carpenter.

Full disclosure: I love John Carpenter's flicks. The great, the good and the bad. In fact the only film of Carpenter's I'm not a particular fan of is Memoirs of an Invisible Man but that being said I will try and give the remakes a fair shake.

For instance, I didn't mind the remake of Assault on Precinct 13. Since the first one is essentially a remake of Rio Bravo it's kind of hard to poke holes. The Fog however sucked. The original isn't a masterpiece but it's decent, this thing with all it's bells and whistles of cg and other such technology missed what made the original half decent which was a heart of sorts.

There was life in the original Fog characters, like the priest. It was a character that had depth. The remake was filled with people from the WB.

So it scares me when my favorites Halloween, Escape from New York and The Thing are lined up next.

Halloween is the only one definitely in production at this moment in time (well probably done production. It currently has an August release date) and it is in the hand of Mr. Rob Zombie.

Now Zombie I'm willing to give a shot. House of 1000 Corpses is not great by any means (but in it's defence, how could it ever live up to like three years of hype of the "horror film studios were scared to release"). Devil's rejects however I thought was awesome. Great vengeance/horror film and it also showed Zombie's growth of a director.

Zombie is a huge fan of the original. Now that's a tricky line to tow. How do you remake a movie you love without doing a shot by shot remake (Psycho anyone?) and still make a movie that is yours and is good?

Disney gets rid of DVD sequels

"As part of the reorganizing of Disney's animation unit, John Lasseter of PIXAR fame has put an end to direct to DVD sequels to the studios theatrical films claiming that films like Bambi II and Aladdin III destroy the integrity of their original stories. Included in this is the previously scheduled Tinkerbell movie, which was - according to Lasseter - a mess."

Other such crap sequels that have already been released included The Little Mermaid 2 where Ariel's daughter wants to be a mermaid.

If you are still clamoring for that film however just buy the Little mermaid and when you're done hit rewind on your dvd player. Two movies for the price of one.

Benoit and the media

I had earlier in the day decided I wasn't going to retouch the subject especially since everyone else is across the board but it has become an interesting exercise in a media study of spin.

Here are the facts:

Chris Benoit is dead and he more then likely murdered his wife and child before he committed suicide. These are facts that aren't likely to change.

But here's where the weird aspect of the media comes in and spin.

Monday night, the WWE's website was filled with tidbits about Benoit his death and his life.

RAW (the WWE's monday night wrestling program) was not live. They canceled the sold out live event and instead paid tribute to their fallen co-worker both in comments and be rebroadcasting his finest matches.

This was all before the WWE and the public knew what had happened.

Now if you go through the WWE's website, there is only one mention of him and that regards the facts as the WWE knows them. All mentions of Benoit have been deleted from various things (take a look through the dvd section of their online store for instance) and the tributes have been taken down. The tribute show will not be re-broadcast.

In many ways this is the most respectful the WWE has ever been about such things.

And the wwe has also made a statement regarding how steroids more then likely did not cause this tragedy.

I believe that is what they refer to in movies as "batting down the hatches"

Now on to me.

I was a little torn on if I should take down my previous post in light to the new facts. I've decided that I would just in light of the fact that something I had heard along the line is wrong about a man I respected. DVD News Kill Bill Uncut and Masters of Horror

Well, I guess in terms of an uncut version of Kill Bill on dvd any news is good news. Amazon has posted a preorder for Kill Bill - The Whole Bloody Affair but not much in the way of details. It's apparently going to be 4 discs. They also list the running time as being 247 mins which happens to be one minute less than both theatrical versions put together. Now this could just be Amazon being lazy or it could mean something interesting since in the combined cut of the film the intro part to Kill Bill vol 2 would be not be there. Food for thought.

Next up we have the entire season 1 of Masters of Horror. Now be warned the show is hit and miss. Each episode is a mini-movie done by great horror directors. My personal favorite is John carpenter's Cigarette Burns. But it also includes the fucked up-ness of Takashi Miike's Imprint.

And it comes in a cool box.

Things that I never thought I'd see

There are a few things I never thought I'd actually see. I never thought the theatrical cut of Blade Runner would be available on DVD. I didn't think we'd get a Simpsons movie (which later changed to a I didn't think we'd get it until the series ended) and I really thought my chain was going to be yanked about Indiana Jones 4 until Harrison Ford was dead.

Well all of those things are existing or on their way to exist.

Yup it's an older Indy. Yesterday was Ford's first day of shooting in the costume.

And then we got an awesome Simpsons Trailer.

Blade Runner Goodness!

Blade Runner is one of the most influential sci-fi movies ever made.
You can not deny that fact.

It also happens to be a film that has more stories about it then most sci-fi films. And probably more complaints then others as well.

Fr instance I'm one of those people who isn't completly satisfied with either cut of the movie. The "Director's" cut of the film has a much better ending BUT it drags due in certain parts due to the loss of the narration.

Well thank goodness for DVD.

The rumored Blade Runner: The Final Cut is on it's way in the fall. Details are kind of sketchy but we do know the following. It's going to be 4 or 5 discs. It will probably contain the theatrical cut of the film, the "Director's" cut of the film and a brand new cut we have yet to see. They have shot reportedly 75 mins of new footage for it. I imagine this set will be very similar to the Aliens Quadrilogy; it will have new extras and probably every Blade Runner extra that has been previously put out alone with various documentaries.
