New Comics Wed

Ah Wednesday, the day of new comics. Although this week was kind of slow it did bring me two things I had been waiting on.

First off we have Guy Ritchie's The Gamekeeper #2 out of Virgin Comics. I'll be honest, I have no idea how much input Guy has on the comic but writer Andy Diggle and artist Mukesh Singh are delivery a gritty action mystery that I await now every month. man it would make an awesome movie. Just a general overview, Brock is the gamekeeper of this very nice Scottish estate. Brock also happens to have some sort of dark past involving Chechnya and killing people. Then mercenaries attack the estate. And Brock starts killing people.

What's not to love?

Ok full disclosure here. I am a big Neil Gaiman fan. The man is one of my major writing influences. I once sat for over three hours to meet the man in person and he is one of the nicest people in comics I have ever met (he even spoke to my then girlfriend and joked with her about how she had no idea who he was and that she was a very good girlfriend for waiting with me).
So this review may be slightly biased.
But I will also qualify it with this. Gaiman's last marvel work 1602, while I very much liked it, fell a little short for me.
But The Eternals however fires on all cylinders.
The Eternals were a group of gods (sort of) created for Marvel by Jack Kirby. If you don't know who Jack Kirby is, wikipedia him now....I'll wait.
Anyways these were characters that suit Gaiman's writing sensibilities while still allowing him to expand into the spandex world of Marvel. Essentially Gaiman get's to do gods with capes and does it well. He also has created such a story that you don't have to know anything about the characters in order to dive right in. I'm in that boat. My only contact with the characters were ads for a mini series in the back of an issue of Thor.
And the art is just awesome. John Romita Jr. is in his element. I always liked his run on Thor and thought his style was perfect for the book but I was wrong. JRJR's style is perfect for this book. There are a few two page spreads that are just out of his world. And it looks like Kirby but not without it looking equaly JRJR. An amazing balance.
Probably the best collection I've picked up this year.
Chittendango's Pull List
Buffy The Vampire Slayer
The Gamekeeper
Fallen Son: The Death of Captain America
